D.I.P.S.S. Skin Generator Rev 1.0.5.

The taste of a pretty girl's lips. The feel of a working man's hands. The sheen of skin, fresh out the shower.

Skin is the largest and most varied organ of the human body. The great challenge of 3D art has always been to convince the human eye that 3D skin is real. Until now, the best solution has been to use photographs and body scans, stretched over a mesh, with lots of airbrushing and stitching.

Using photos as a base for human models is like using stickers on your car instead of paint.

The Dermal Infinity Procedural Skinning System is a photorealistic human(oid) skin generating addon for Blender. It uses a complex of algorithms combined with user input to create realistic skin textures in any hue, at any level of detail, and any resolution.

It does all this with zero photographic assets. Make any character look any way you like. Standard humans, fantasy races, aliens, anthro-furries... All of this, without stitching or airbrushing seams, stretching photos over a UV map, or pasting details over the photos you've stretched and stitched.

And unlike most existing skin asset packages, D.I.P.S.S. has built-in internal and genital texture options.

1.0.1. was my first Integer release. Previous releases have been experimental, and while usable, not entirely complete. After two years and literally hundreds of hours of work, I finally have a product I can confidently say is superior to the current standard. A genuine upgrade with infinite potential.

Now, after many more weeks, I am proud to release the next major upgrade of this system: 1.0.5.
1.0.5. has two of my original planned features as well as one I hadn't thought of until after the release of 1.0.1.
I also spent a good deal of time optimizing both the UI, and some core elements of the Procedural Array.

New Features for 1.0.5:

  • Greatly Simplified Joint Angle system
  • Procedural Eyebrow textures
  • Procedural Finger and Toe Nail textures
  • Segmented UI for easier organization
  • Subsurface Colour and Intensity maps for Baked Array

Features for 1.0.1:

Individual Procedural Groups: Add details to existing skin textures.
Automatic Baking: Bake your results to a texture for use in animation or games.
Procedural Peach Fuzz
Procedural Random Redness
Dark skin, Light palms: Paintable areas of lighter skin, like the palms and soles of black skin.

Features In Dev:

Single-input Scale Math
Fingernails -- Completed 1.0.5.
Penis Flesh
Stubble
Freckles

Future Plans:

Subcutaneous Veins
Fingerprints
Eyes
Blemishes
Scars
Stretchmarks
Tongue

These are some sample renders of my test model. She is UV mapped as a single mesh, so all her details bake out to the same resolution. I did her this way because it was easier to develop the system.

At the output of the procedural array, the 'image resolution' is for all practical purposes, infinite. As such, you can bake it at any sample rate and resolution your hardware is capable of.

You can also achieve far greater detail on areas like the face, hands, and genitals, by using a multi-layered UV, or making them as separate meshes.

1.0.1. Renders:

Procedural, no bake:

4 samples, 512 res:

8 samples, 2k res:

64 samples, 1k res:

12 samples, 4k res:

32 samples, 4k res:

64 samples, 4k res:

All the baked textures are packed in the sample model file for your reference.

1.0.5. Renders:

These are baked at 64 samples, 2k resolution.

Below I have some comparison images from 1.0.1. and 1.0.5. put on the same mesh. I couldn't find a good image of the lips from 1.0.1. at the same resolution, but the lack of depth is still fairly obvious.

I also did not alter the mask images for these examples, which interfered a little with the lips and joint crease angles, so if you wish to update a character in the same fashion, those two in particular may need some touchups.
